Structural Accessibility

PURPOSE

This one-day training focuses on the accessibility standards for all housing programs using any federal dollars. Federal monies spent on the development of the property, rehabilitation of structures in the real estate portfolio, or support of the residents makes the property eligible for mandatory compliance under the 504-UFAS requirements. It can be combined with the two-day Fair Housing and Reasonable Accommodation training to create a three-day seminar.

Structural Accessibility covers the differences between fair housing standards for accessibility (used when no federal dollars are involved) and the various other accessibility standards for public buildings. HUD's Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) is actively auditing public housing authorities and multifamily housing developments in an effort to increase accessibility compliance on 504-UFAS and fair housing sites as applicable. We will discuss the current voluntary compliance agreement (VCA) trends and look at a sample of lawsuits brought by FHEO and the Department of Justice (DOJ) in their efforts to drive compliance with housing providers.
