      2011 Excellence in Housing Award
      Rochester Housing Authority

Nan McKay and Associates is proud to announce that the 2011 winner of the NMA Excellence in Housing Award is the Rochester Housing Authority.

Rochester Housing Authority leveraged creative funding techniques to initiate the revitalization of a blighted neighborhood, going beyond just adding new housing to increase self-sufficiency opportunities for their residents, preserve the historical sense of the area, and instill a sense of pride in the neighborhood.

Partnering with other community agencies, Rochester Housing Authority's Voters Block Community will include a neighborhood café providing jobs to residents, as well as a prison outreach program to help settle former inmates. This innovative project is truly a model for other cities and public housing authorities across the nation.

      2011 Pioneer in Housing Award
Housing Authority of the County of San Diego

This year, we received a great number of entries in the Pioneer in Housing category, all of them worthy of recognition. Our judges were able to narrow the selection down to two agencies—Housing Authority of the County of San Diego and Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara. The final decision was to award both of these agencies with a Pioneer in Housing Award for their important, groundbreaking advances in the assisted housing industry
    • The Housing Authority of the County of San Diego developed TourSolver, a software program to optimize inspector travel routes. The use of TourSolver effectively reduced the labor hours needed to schedule HQS inspections by more than 21 hours per month, thereby reducing costs by approximately $30,000 annually. TourSolver has the potential to revolutionize how government inspections of all types (building, restaurant, etc.) are conducted in the future.

      2011 Pioneer in Housing Award
Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara

The Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara took advantage of the opportunity offered by ARRA grants in a truly innovative fashion. By creating a non-profit, and leveraging rebates and other funding sources—all while juggling three different municipal power districts—they were able to generate $12.5 million in funding to install 7,200 solar panels in 21 properties for more than 800 homes. This will result in a significant cost savings over time, saving money that the PHA can use for other services. Their achievement brings not only financial but environmental improvement to the agency, setting an amazing precedent for the future of the industry and benefiting tenants and the local community for decades to come.
