2010 Excellence in Housing Award
St. Petersburg Housing Authority

Nan McKay and Associates is proud to announce that the 2010 winner of the NMA Excellence in Housing Award is the St. Petersburg Housing Authority.

Over the past year, the St. Petersburg Housing Authority took the initiative to reinvigorate their Section 3 program, partnering with Catholic Charities, Inc., a division of the Catholic Dioceses of St. Petersburg to conduct skills assessments of public housing families. Leveraging their ARRA money, the SPHA was also able to hire residents for development and modernization projects. Those with willingness and ability were subsequently placed into jobs.

The goal of SPHA's Section 3 program is to help establish long-term employment and sustainable self-sufficiency. In meeting this ambitious goal, the St. Petersburg Housing Authority has moved beyond merely complying with Section 3 requirements to truly embodying the spirit of the Section 3 program.

2010 Pioneer in Housing Award (Large Agency)
Pinellas County Housing Authority

Nan McKay and Associates is proud to announce that the 2010 Pioneer in Housing Award in the larger agency category goes to the Pinellas County Housing Authority.

PCHA set an ambitious five-year goal to implement green initiatives. They enacted a green procurement policy, provided training and education for staff on green initiatives, and created recycling programs. Greening committees were formed to represent each department. In addition, PCHA facilitated proactive energy inspections of every property in their jurisdiction, identifying repairs that would reduce energy bills and protect the environment. Taking advantage of grants and programs allowed the agency to defer many of the repair costs.

The successful implementation of this strategic goal allowed PCHA to achieve significant cost savings for both the agency and residents, having a positive impact on the community by helping to increase sustainability.

2010 Pioneer in Housing Award (Small Agency)
Howard County Housing Authority

Nan McKay and Associates is proud to announce that Howard County Housing Authority is the recipient of our 2010 Pioneer in Housing Award in the small agency category.

HCHA partnered with federal, state, and local entities to demolish existing outdated, poorly managed public housing and replace it with the Monarch Mills community, a 269-unit mixed-income property. The community development focused on energy efficiency, improved health and wellness, and educational and outreach opportunities for residents.

Monarch Mills features a clubhouse that will serve a variety of functions for both residents and the community, including a homework/learning center, business center, and the resident association.

In creating Monarch Mills, the HCHA is not only providing exceptional, green housing for its residents, but also offering services to improve their quality of life. HCHA is truly setting a remarkable example for the future of the industry.

2010 Champion in Housing Award (Northern Region)
Lake County Housing Authority

Nan McKay and Associates is proud to recognize the Lake County Housing Authority as the winner of the 2010 Champion in Housing Award in the Northern Region.

This forward-looking agency serves their region well, with the good sense to use outside resources where deficiencies in the agency can be improved.

LCHA works with local groups like the Girl Scouts, hosting educational events and fundraisers. With a major focus on bettering the community, LCHA goes beyond merely providing housing — their contributions and efforts within their neighborhoods are excellent examples of the way that housing authorities can truly make a difference.

2010 Champion in Housing Award (Southeastern Region)
Housing Authority of the City of Fort Myers

Nan McKay and Associates is pleased to announce the Housing Authority of the City of Fort Myers as the 2010 winner of the NMA Champion in Housing Award for the Southeastern Region.

In the past eight years, HACFM has worked with exceptional dedication to raise their performance from "troubled" to "high performer." In addition to achieving this goal, they have run several lauded programs, including Homeownership and Section 3, and developed a number of successful HOPE VI projects.  They significantly increased the number of vouchers available for families, and obtained grants to build new affordable rental housing.

Additionally, HACFM has established themselves as an NMA training center, running many successful seminars at that location. The scope of what HACFM has accomplished, and the professional dedication of their staff, is truly impressive.
